About Us
The Garden Club of Grand Cayman
The Garden Club of Grand Cayman has been a working garden club for over 65 years. It is run by a committee of seven members, From left to right are shown: Laura Eggilshaw – 2nd Vice President; Berna Cummins (whose mother was a founding member) – Assistant Treasurer; Jill Wood – President; Diane Vasic – Secretary; Susanne Scholl – Vice President; Elaine Campbell – Immediate Past President. Missing is Cynthia Andre – Treasurer. The committee changes every two years at the Annual General Meeting held at Government House in January.
Our Aim
Our aims are to meet others interested in plants and gardens, to give tips on looking after plants on this island, to visit beautiful gardens for our monthly meetings and to help keep Cayman beautiful. We also undertake projects, either ourselves or in concert with other groups, to help beatify the community while promoting interest in and knowledge of gardening. This includes being involved with schools and encouraging youngsters to grow vegetables. We aim to increase our engagement with Youth Groups and others to further promote all aspects of gardening.
What We Do
We run the annual Family Fun Day at the Botanic Park every January. This event is always a lot of fun with collected funds contributing to the enhancement of the Children’s Garden at the Park. We hold an annual plant sale at the PinkLadies Christmas Bazaar at the ARC in Camana Bay and we also hold a plant sale outside ALT’s in the spring to collect funds for our projects. All plants being sold are raised by Garden Club members. We also start seedlings that once large enough are given back to the Cayman Community Farm in Savannah to plant out. This farm grows and supplies vegetables and fruits to underprivileged in the community. This year we are also hoping to plant more trees around the island.
